The northern\u00a0peninsula\u00a0of\u00a0Michigan\u00a0has been known for mining copper, iron ore and other substances. One commodity required for mining is explosives. With the\u00a0volatile\u00a0nature of explosives it makes sense to manufacture close to the delivery\/usage point. Pepin-Ireco Inc is\u00a0one explosives manufacturer in the area that receives their raw materials by rail. Finished products are then delivered by truck.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pepin-Ireco Inc is serviced by Vreeland\u00a0Rail. The line is the old CNW\u00a0line running south from Ishpeming to beyond National Mine. Until recently the line was operated as the “Mineral Range Railroad” (not to be confused with the old Mineral Range Railroad in the Keewenaw) but is now “Vreeland\u00a0Rail”.<\/p>\n

Vreeland\u00a0Rail is a 4 mile long short line which runs south from Winthrop Jct., near Ishpeming to serve a scrapyard and the explosives company. The line uses an EMD SW1 locomotive. The scenery along the line can be\u00a0picturesque\u00a0and is dotted with old buildings and the remnants of days of mining and company houses.
